Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Friday said the White House “has coordinated with US organizations to transport more humanitarian relief to people in Wuhan,” the coronavirus-ravaged Chinese city at the epicenter of the deadly outbreak.
“Personal protective equipment and other medical supplies donated by these organizations can help save lives in #China and help protect people from the #coronavirus,” the top US diplomat said in a tweet.
His announcement comes after a phone call between President Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping, who said his government is confident about and capable of defeating the epidemic.
Earlier Friday, Trump praised Xi for “leading the counterattack” against the coronavirus, saying he was leading “what will be a very successful operation.”
“Great discipline is taking place in China, as President Xi strongly leads what will be a very successful operation. We are working closely with China to help!” Trump said in a tweet.
Chinese health officials said they confirmed more than 31,000 cases of the coronavirus, more than 4,800 of them considered severe. The death toll has surpassed 630, with fatalities almost entirely confined to China.
