Sharks have killed a Southern California woman vacationing in the Bahamas. A family crowdfunding web page set up to cover the cost of bringing her body home identifies the victim as 21-year-old Jordan Lindsey of Torrance. Commissioner Paul Rolle of the Royal Bahamas Police Force told the Associated Press that Lindsey was attacked by three sharks on Wednesday near Rose Island while snorkelling with her family.

CBS Los Angeles said Lindsay's parents and other family members saw the sharks and tried to shout a warning to her, but she didn't hear them in time. Officials told the AP that Lindsey was bitten on the arms, legs and buttocks, and her right arm was severed.

She was pronounced dead at a hospital, but it was not immediately clear if she died at the beach or en route to the emergency room.

A statement on the family's GoFunde page, where they were trying to raise $25,000 to cover the costs of repatriating Lindsay's body, described her as having "the most beautiful, gentle soul" and said she "will be missed deeply."

A statement issued early Thursday morning by Timothy Law Synder, the President of Loyola Marymount University, said Lindsey was a communication studies major at the university. Synder said Lindsey was a "devoted animal lover and climate change advocate."

The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism and Aviation expressed condolences and "deepest sympathies" to the family in a statement, and said officials were still investigating the incident. In the meantime, it said another government agency had issued "precautionary advisories to the public" following the shark attack.

China to Insist U.S. Lifts Huawei Ban as Part of Trade Truce - Wall Street Journal

OSAKA, Japan—Chinese President Xi Jinping plans to present President Trump with a set of terms the U.S. should meet before Beijing is ready to settle a market-rattling trade confrontation, raising questions of whether the two leaders will agree to relaunch talks.

Among the preconditions, said Chinese officials with knowledge of the plan, Beijing is insisting that the U.S. remove its ban on the sale of U.S. technology to Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei Technologies Co. Beijing also wants the U.S. to lift all punitive tariffs and drop efforts to get China to buy even more U.S. exports than Beijing said it would when the two leaders last met in December.

The U.S. chief trade negotiator, Robert Lighthizer, and his Chinese counterpart, Liu He, talked by telephone this week on ways to get the talks back on track and expect to meet in person in advance of the presidents’ Saturday lunch meeting after a Group of 20 summit in Osaka, said people familiar with the discussions. It is far from clear what the two will manage—and whether their bosses will approve their work.

Despite his preconditions, Mr. Xi isn’t expected to take a confrontational tone with Mr. Trump, according to the Chinese officials. Rather, they say, he will sketch out what he envisions as an optimal bilateral relationship, which includes China’s help on security issues vexing to the U.S., especially Iran and North Korea.

For their part, U.S. officials say they are going into the meeting looking to see whether their Chinese counterparts are willing to pick up negotiations from where they broke off. According to U.S. and Chinese officials, the two nations were close to a trade deal in April when, in the U.S. view, China reneged on provisions. It is up to Beijing, U.S. officials feel, to get the talks back on track.

Jordan Lindsay, 21, of Torrance, California, had been on a snorkeling expedition with her family near Rose Island, according to CNN affiliate WPLG.
Around 2 p.m. she was attacked by three sharks, Deputy Commissioner Paul Rolle told the station. She was bitten on her arms, legs and buttocks and her right arm was bitten off, he said.
Her family saw the oncoming sharks and tried to warn her, but Lindsay did not hear them in time, he told the station.
She was pulled from the water and taken to Doctor's Hospital in Nassau, where she was pronounced dead, Reserve Superintendent Ronnie Bannister told CNN.
Lindsay's body will be taken to Princess Margaret Hospital in Nassau for an autopsy and then transported to California by the US Embassy, Rolle told WPLG.

Germany's June temperature record smashed as Europe's heat wave intensifies - CNN International

The German Weather Service said the mercury hit 38.6 degrees Celsius (101.5 Fahrenheit) at 2:50 p.m. local time in Coschen, on the country's border with Poland.
The previous record stood at 38.5 Celsius (101.3 Fahrenheit), which was measured in 1947 in Bühlertal, which lies close to France.
The longevity of the previous record -- 72 years -- shows just how unusual and intense the current heat wave is in Europe. Any sign of quick relief is not on cards either.
'Climate apartheid' to push 120 million into poverty by 2030, UN says
Climate scientists have warned that heat waves such as this one are becoming more frequent and increasingly severe because of the climate crisis. Météo-France, the French national weather authority, said the frequency of such events is expected to double by 2050.
Temperatures exceeding 40 Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) are forecast in a number of major cities across the continent, with meteorologists warning that higher humidity could make it feel even hotter.
France's national weather forecaster Météo-France, increased the number of heat-related weather alerts to 78 on Wednesday from earlier 65.
Hot air from Africa is bringing a heat wave to Europe.
A new June temperature record was also set in neighboring Poland, where meteorologists measured 38.2 Celsius.
While 100 degrees Fahrenheit might not sound like an exceptionally hot weather to some, such temperatures are far above average across central and western Europe.
Human-induced climate change makes heatwaves 30 times more likely
"When summer temperatures are routinely in the 70s, like in northern Europe or the West Coast of the US, many places do not have air conditioning. This can turn deadly fast if heat waves strike and last for several days," CNN senior meteorologist Brandon Miller said.
National weather authorities in Belgium, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Switzerland have issued heat warnings, advising people to avoid strenuous activities at midday and in the afternoon, drink plenty of water and stay out of the sun. Children and the elderly are particularly at risk.
Children and the elderly are most at risk from heat-related illnesses.
Heat waves in Europe have been deadly in the past, which is why national authorities in several countries took steps to provide at least some relief to the most vulnerable people.
European public health bodies are trying to prevent a repeat of last year, when heat waves resulted in deaths in Spain and Portugal and drought conditions in Germany and Sweden.
During the record 2003 European heat wave, more than 14,000 people died in France alone.
Europe to experience 'intense heat' in multi-day heat wave
Paris City Hall activated a plan on Tuesday that included installing 48 mist showers throughout the city, extending hours at public swimming pools, keeping some parks open all night and opening cool rooms in designated public buildings, officials said.
French national school exams also have been postponed by the education ministry, for the first time ever, to next week.
The German state of Sachsen-Anhalt has imposed a speed limit on a few stretches of the Autobahn highway system because the heat can cause road surfaces to lift.

People across Europe are searching for ways to keep cool amid soaring temperatures.

A potentially deadly heatwave - caused by a plume of hot air from the Sahara, according to meteorologists - has already caused a rush on fans and the cancellation of exams for some teenagers in France.

But with experts suggesting France, Germany, Switzerland and Belgium could set new temperature records for June in the coming days, it looks likely it will get hotter still.

The crisis at the US-Mexico border: Latest news - CNN

Oscar Alberto Martinez and his daughter — identified by officials from El Salvador as Angie Valeria M. — drowned in the currents of the Rio Grande on Sunday as they tried to slip into the United States.

Their bodies were found Monday near Matamoros, across the river from Brownsville, Texas. The child was 2 years old, The Associated Press reported.

The photograph was taken by journalist Julia Le Duc, who lives in Mexico.

In the image, the young girl is tucked inside her father's shirt, her right arm slung around his neck as they lie near the shore. Their bodies have come to rest near a river bank where five discarded beer cans and an empty soda bottle sit in the tall reeds. Another beer can floats next to the girl's body.

Mexican newspaper, La Jornada talked to the man's wife, Tania, who said she saw her husband and child drown Sunday.
